It was a Sunday when we visited Tōji Temple 東寺¹ and coincidentally there was a flea market — held on the first Sunday of every month. Within the compound was the Kondo Hall, the temple’s main hall and largest building. What intrigued me were the neatly stacked red pails with the words 消火用² on them. Well, the structure is huge. If a fire really breaks out, would the few pails of water actually help? Just saying
